As Keith Rowley continues his meet the constituencies tour on Monday media reports say at least two top People's National Movement (PNM) members have stated that they have no interest in contesting any post in the internal election of the party on May 18.
Laventille East/Morvant MP Donna Cox told reporters Sunday she will not be contesting any post in the elections. And former party chairman Conrad Enill said he too will not put his name on a ballot.
Enill, who ran the 2010 election campaign, supported Rowley’s move to introduce one-member, one-vote into the party. But he appears to be disappointed that the party is not making the progress he anticipated.
Enill shot into thge media limelight last week when he and Jack Warner went to a meeting with OWTU President General Ancel Roget to discuss the oil spills at Petrotrin. The day before Rowley met with Roget.
The meeting between the leader of the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) and Enill raised speculation on two fronts, one suggesting Warner was moving closer to the PNM the other than Enill was moving to the ILP.
Enill put an end to the talk by stating that he was now an independent energy consultant and he acted in that capacity with Warner as his client.
The PNM has agreed that nomination day for the election would be March 14 and that a full list of eligible voters would be published by April 30. The party has said new members who register by February 28 would be allowed to vote. The party has also said it would ask all leaderhip candidates to sign a code of behaviour for the election.
PNM chairman Franklin Khan explained that the code of conduct deals with issues such as the use of the media, campaign financing and slander. The PNM is making sure the rules would prevent candidates from making personal attacks against other candidates.
