Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Monday handed out cheques to eight religious leaders for the celebration of Christmas 2013. She met with the group at her office in St Clair.

Government has given out close to $10 million in grants to the Christian religious community on the occasion of Christmas.

The Ministry of National Diversity and Social Integration has given out $6 million to the major religious bodies, according to Minister of National Diversity and Social Integration, Rodger Samuel. Minister Samuel said Government also distributes grants to religious bodies for Eid and Divali.

Grants were also given out by the Sports and Culture Fund, under the Office of the Prime Minister, in the vicinity of $4 million.
