UNC wins Moruga by 10 votes in EBC recount

The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) on Wednesday delcared that the
United National Congress (UNC) candidate Phillip Gonsalves has won the
Moruga electoral district by 10 votes.

The People’s National Movement (PNM) candidate Kerwyn Williams, requested the recount, which was held at the EBC’s registration office in Princes Town.

Commenting on the result, Gonsalves told local media, "I believe God is in control and he is the one who could have called this since the night of the election."

He added, "The people of Moruga will continue to get good representation just as I have been doing for the past three years. I am glad this is over now and we are ready to get ourselves together and do what is required for the people of Moruga.”
The EBC declared Gonsalves the winner with 1,843 votes. The PNM candidate had contested the results following the October 21 local government election and EBC officials conducted a recount of the votes the following day.

The first recount gave Williams a 40-vote lead over the UNC candidate who requested a second recount, which gave the seat to the UNC.
