No land to build (Guardian report)

From the Trinidad Guardian:

There is a crushing need for Housing Development Corporation (HDC) houses, with 214,000 applications in, but there is little or no state land available to construct new houses at this time, HDC managing director Jearlean John says. John made the disclosure at a Joint Select Committee (JSC) meeting in Parliament yesterday (Friday). “The need for housing is a crushing one. There are 214,000 persons applying for houses,” John told the JSC meeting.

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) chairman Rabindra Moonan is claiming the corporation was a free for all horror under the former People’s National Movement (PNM) administration, with no financial statements for the period from 2004 to 2007. People occupying HDC houses, some from as far back as 1995, owe the corporation some $225 million as a result of the mismanagement that occurred, he added.
