I am no loser: Ian Alleyne

Ian Alleyne told supporters Monday night, "I am no loser."

That was his response to his defeat in a byelection by the People's National Movement (PNM) in the St Joseph byelection. It was a close race between the PNM and the United National Congress (UNC) with the PNM's Terrence Deyalsingh winning by 779 votes. The final count showed the PNM won 6,356 and Alleyne got 5,577.

Alleyne said his former lawyer, Om Lalla, who was the canidate for the Independent Liberal Party (ILP), should be ashamed of his performance that allowed the PNM to win the seat. Lalla polled 1976 votes. fewer than half of those votes would have given Alleyne victory.

He said he is proud of the work that he was able to do for St Joseph in just 10 days and promised that he would continue to work for the people of St Joseph. He promised to be back and give the PNM a "wetting" in the 2015 general election.
Alleyne added that he was proiud to serve with "the best prime minister in the world" and the "best party" ever.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar thanked Alleyne, his campaign manager, Ganga Singh, and all others who worked on the campaign. She congratulated Deyalsingh and served notice on the new MP that he is holding the seat temporarily. However she was clear that the people of st Joseph won't be penalised for voting against her party.

"From tonight and tomorrow we continue in office...dedicated and committed to serving all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. My government remains committed to serving all the people." she stated.

Singh promised that on Wednesday the UNC would begin the 2015 campaign to "wrest control" of the seat from the PNM. In earlier remarks, he blamed the the ILP for causing the UNC's loss and declared that the ILP is now dead.

UNC Deputy Political Leader Roodal Moonilal said the result showed two things - that the UNC remains strong and that vote splitting caused the loss.
