From the Office of the Attorney General
The Central Authority Unit under the direction of Attorney General Anand Ramlogan has been successful in obtaining a Warrant of Committal for Amarnath Jagmohan, a Dutch national.
Chief Magistrate Ayers-Caesar sitting in the 8th Court, Port of Spain Magistrates Court today issued an order committing Jagmohan to custody to await his extradition to Singapore to face charges of four counts of uttering forged documents and one count of possession of counterfeit currency.
It is alleged that sometime in May 2003 Jagmohan visited several moneylenders in Singapore and attempted to change counterfeit Euros for Singapore dollars. He was also found in possession of counterfeit Euros.
Jagmohan was charged in Singapore but before his trial could commence, Jagmohan absconded while on bail and fled Singapore. He was subsequently located in Trinidad and Tobago where he was arrested on the 29th January 2013 under a provisional warrant of arrest.
Jagmohan was represented by attorney David West, who during the committal proceedings filed an unsuccessful Habeas Corpus application on behalf of his client and also made no case submission.
The Central Authority represented by Jagdeo Singh, Netram Kowlessar, Renee Charles and Kylene Deosingh went on to successfully defeat these applications and to obtain a Warrant of Committal from Chief Magistrate Ayers-Caesar.
In recent times, the Central Authority Unit has been proactive in managing and securing the extradition of several internationally wanted persons. This decision comes on the heels of a string of successful extraditions that have attracted much commendation and praise, for example, Doreen Alexander was extradited to the US on 31st March 2013 to face charges relating to the kidnapping and murder of Balram “Balo” Maharaj.
The United States Embassy in a press release dated 3rd April 2013, specially commended the valuable assistance of the Attorney General in effecting this extradition. According to the release the extradition underscores “the continuing diplomatic and law enforcement cooperation between both countries.”
On the 23rd August 2013 Keron Pierre was extradited to the United States to face charges relating to a triple homicide and attempted murder.
On 1st February 2013 Andy Nelson pleaded guilty in the United Kingdom to two charges for conspiracy to supply and import cocaine. Nelson was extradited to the United Kingdom on the 14th September, 2012.
Gary Govindass who was extradited to the United States in February 2012 pleaded guilty on 5th August 2013 to charges relating to the kidnapping of Vedesh Mohan. The extradition process relating to this alleged co-conspirator Hassan Atwell is currently ongoing.
The Central Authority Unit under the lead of Attorney General Anand Ramlogan continues to successfully perform the critical role of operating as a key mechanism in stemming the surge of international crime and maintaining the rule of law.
