COP wants three regional corporations in LGE

The Congress of the People is interested in fighting seats in three municipal areas in the 2013 Local Government Election.

The party said Sunday it hopes to win control of the Arima Borough Corporation, the Diego Martin Regional Corporation and the San Fernando City Corporation.

COP’s chairman Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan said the party would begin to mobilise for the screening of potential candidates in the next seven days.

The life of the 14 local government corporations in Trinidad expire on July 26 and the election must be held not later that 90 days from that date.

Seepersad-Bachan said it cannot wait until after the Chaguanas West byelection to begin the process. She explained why. "We are putting our potential candidates in a very dangerous and disadvantage opposition and we do not want to be rushing for the allocation of our seats," Seepersad-Bachan said.

COP Leader Prakash Ramadhar told reporters candidates should be chosen based on their values and not personality, noting that politics is too engrossed into personality.

With respect to the Chaguanas West election, the party plans to hold a meeting Friday at Felicity Hindu Primary School on Tuesday evening in support of the partnership candidate, Khadijah Ameen.
