Chagunas West voting in crucial byelection

The people of Chagunas West are voting today, July 29, in a byelection that is really a contest between their former MP, Jack Warner and the candidate for the United National Congress, Khadijah Ameen. 

The other candidates are Avinash Singh - People’s National Movement; Kirk Meighoo - Democratic National Assembly (DNA) and Oliver Norman - National Coalition for Transformation (NCT). Ishmael Samad of the Party for Integrity and Morality in Politics (PIMP), is also on the ballot but he has dropped out.

Warner has been the MP since 2007 when he first won the seat for the UNC. He was re-elected in 2010 with more than 18,000 votes but resigned in April days after he quit as a senior cabinet minister and chairman of the UNC.

He is contesting the seat as the candidate for his newly formed Independent Liberal Party (ILP).

Ameen was an elected councillor and chair of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation. It is the first time she is entering a race for a parliamentary seat.

The official list shows that 27,045 people are eligible to vote at 14 polling stations. The polls will close at 6 in the evening.
