Cabinet has approved the acquisition of 300 new vehicles and added personnel for a new Rapid Response Unit.
Persad Bissessar said Government will use modern technology to determine how illegal cell phones got into the country's prisons. The scanners would be used alongside “jammers and grabbers” to cut off signals from the illegal phones and intercept information for intelligence purposes, she said.
Persad-Bissessar said advised reporters that Mitchell has accepted Government’s invitation to come to T&T for the visit of US Vice President, Joe Biden at the end of the month.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar made the announcement Thursday at the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister. She said the plan is to have a vehicle available near each police station.
With respect to extra personnel, she said the Ministry of Tertiary Education will soon begin training 2,000 Special Reserve Police (SRP) to work alongside police.

Persad-Bissessar made the statements as she sat next to the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr Keith Mitchell who told the media he was in Port of Spain to strengthen Grenada-T&T relations.
He and Persad-Bissessar discussed co-operation on security, trade, education and health. T&T is also to recruit nurses from Grenada.
