Letter: Why the fight down?

Growing up, my parents never missed an opportunity to expose my siblings and me to the annual Independence parades and the displays put on by the Defence Force at their military tattoos.

These events were something we looked forward to as children and it gave us somewhat of a good understanding and a sense of pride in our nation’s protective services.

Now, as an adult, upon approaching a soldier along the streets or in any public space, as a matter of fact, I feel a greater sense of security. I am in no way discounting the work/power of the police service but the mere fact of having both parties on patrol, to me, brings a sense of comfort and ease for every citizen and visitor alike.

Is it that the Opposition and their blind followers are against solving the rapidly growing crime situation or God forbid, waiting for an act of crime to hit home?

From my point of view, the Government has been trying every possible crime reduction tool with little to no support from the Oppostion, the so called “Independent” Senators and ‘John’ public.

Joint patrols are nothing new on the world stage - fighting the same cause as we are. It has worked elsewhere so why not here too? Not only would it reduce crime, it would show what comes from working together in harmony, bringing to life the watch words of our nation - discipline, tolerance and production.

I urge all citizens to please follow the debate, familiarize yourselves with public service announcements that inform you of exactly what the Defence Bill is determined to do, spread the awareness that is so critically needed at this time, encourage your children to read the newspapers, help them be a part of this history making effort by the Government.

Don’t make uneducated assumptions but learn the facts and be a part of the crime fighting drive!
