Letter: President cannot fire a PM

His Excellency, President Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona in his inaugural speech made it abundantly clear that he was not an “Executive President” and under the Westminster form of governance there are parameters within which he must operate. He immediately informed all and sundry that: “Powers you think I have, I do not. Powers you think I do not have, I do.”
This was a clear and powerful reminder to all. Yet, two days after this clear and unambiguous reminder, one Dr Sidney Thomas, a Nazarite servant of Yahweh, published in a column in a daily newspaper issue of March 20, 2013, that the framers of our constitution gives the President the power to fire a Prime Minister who is guilty of “usurpation.”

The goodly Dr Thomas is of the view that if “the government we thought we elected is not the government we have” then that is usurpation under natural law and thus our President could fire the Prime Minister. What rubbish! The daily newspaper should not lend itself to such vulgar and irrational ideas.
