UNC wants THA to rescind London's $60,000 a month contract

The United National Congress (UNC) on Thursday called on the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) to rescind a contract to the cousin of THA Chief Secretary Orville London that is worth $60,000 a month.

The contract to Dr Anslem London has been approved but is not ratified by the THA Executive Council, which is seen as a formally by the PNM controlled body.

In a media release the UNC said it views with extreme concern a report in the Newsday newspaper on Wednesday 27 February 2013 under the headline $60,000 a month that the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) has hired Dr Anselm London as a consultant at a salary of $60,000 a month.

"The report, which Newsday said has been confirmed by THA Chief Secretary Orville London, states that Dr. London would be providing consultancy services to the Division of Finance/Enterprise Development of the THA, which he headed for the past 12 years," the party said.

It added, "The UNC sees this as an abuse of the resources of the THA and the taxpayers. What is even more disturbing is that Orville London is more concerned about who leaked this information than the fact that he and his colleagues at the THA have decided to pay $60,000 a month to London’s cousin without battling an eyelid of concern over what is clearly nepotism and corruption."

It asked, "How did the THA arrive at this decision to spend that kind of money on a consultant? Where did the THA advertise for such a professional?"

The release stated, "Not only is this an abuse of resources, it is also a sign of what is to come in the PNM dominated THA.

"The PNM is always first to criticise any and every decision of the People’s Partnership administration but Keith Rowley and the PNM are silent on this matter, which is wrong and unethical.

"The UNC calls on the THA and Orville London to rescind the decision to hire London’s cousin and pay him a monthly salary higher than the Prime Minister of President of Trinidad and Tobago.

"We also call on Dr Keith Rowley to show the same enthusiasm in criticising the PP administration and denounce this clear example of nepotism and cronyism in the PNM controlled THA."
