PM Kamla invites Rowley to talk about presidential candidate(s)

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has invited Opposition Leader Keith Rowley to a meeting at his "earliest convenience" to discuss the matter of a nominee for President.

On Thursday she announced that her People's Partnership would nominate one person and that it would announce the name of that person on Monday afternoon.

At the time both she and the opposition had no candidate. However, on Friday the People's National Movement chief Whip Marlene McDonald write to her advising that it would like to have Justice Rolston Nelson be considered as a "consensus" candidate.

In a media release Saturday the PM responded, noting that while she intends to keep her promise of an announcement on Monday she would like to meet with Rowley.

The release stated: "Following comments by the Honourable Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar at the Post-Cabinet Briefing on Thursday 31st January, 2013, concerning elections for the fifth President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Opposition Chief Whip in the House of Representatives, Ms Marlene Mc Donald, M.P., has today (Friday) written to recommend the Honourable Justice Rolston Nelson SC, of the Caribbean Court of Justice.

"The Prime Minister wishes to advise that diligent and due consideration will be given to the recommendation.

"As already indicated by Prime Minister, a nomination will be announced on Monday 4th 2013. However, after receiving the Opposition's recommendation for President this afternoon Friday 31st january, Prime Minister has invited the Leader of the Opposition, Dr Keith Rowley, MP, to a meeting at the earliest convenience."
