Jack stays as TOP leader; party asked him to withdraw resignation

Ashworth Jack said on Tuesday he is going to continue to lead the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP)

The TOP leader made the announcement at a media briefing in Tobago. There had been widespread speculation that he would resign following TOP's defeat in last month's Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Election in which the People's National Movement (PNM) won all 12 seats.

Jack had been minority leader of the previous assembly and there were three other TOP members in the Tobago governing body.

Based on the results there were many calls for Jack to resign, even from some members of the party. However, he said he wanted some time to think about his political future.

It took longer than he expected because he said he wanted to consult with all arms of his party and hear their views. He also wanted to consult his allies.

Having done that he called a media briefing to announce his decision. Jack told reporters that he had submitted his resignation as leader of the party but there was resistance to accept it, especially from the youth and women's arms.

He said an Island Council meeting was held Monday night and the party he formed asked him to withdraw his resignation.

Jack said based on the party's position, he withdrew his resignation and would continue to lead the party in Tobago and be its main representative in the People's Partnership coalition.
