Duane defends Calypso Monarch title Thursday, confident of winning

Duane O'Connor defends his crown Thursday night in the National Calypso Monarch final at the Queen's Park Savannah, Port of Spain.

He is confident he would retain the title and be one million dollars richer. That's what the first prize is worth.

He is competing against 11 other top calypsonians, including former monarchs - Hollis "Chalkdust Liverpool, Karene Asche and Kurt Allen.

This is the second time that the Calypso finals are being held outside the Dimanche Gras show.

The contestants who will challenge O’Conner are:
  1. Hollis "Chalkdust Liverpool
  2. Karene Asche
  3. Eunice Peters,
  4. Alana Sinnette
  5. Heather MacIntosh
  6. Kizzie Ruiz
  7. Marvah "Marvellous Marva" Joseph
  8. Victoria "Queen Victoria" Cooper
  9. Eric "Pink Panther" Taylor
  10. Kurt Allen
  11. Roderick "Mr Chucky" Gordon
Michael “Sugar Aloes” Osuana didn't make the cut. He was abused by patrons at Saturday's semi finals, apparently because he switched his political support from the People's National Movement (PNM) to the governing People's Partnership (PP).

His work in the past had been very supportive of the PNM but in May last he year he first appeared on a PP stage, serenading the Prime Minister with the popular son, "She's Royal".
