"To be one, to be united is a great thing. But to respect the right to be different is maybe even greater." - U2 Fronman Bono |
Bono speaks at the Liberal Convention in 2003 in Toronto Click here to read the speech |
“I’m a fan of Canada. I believe the world needs more Canada.”
“It’s not just that everybody likes Canada. Everybody respects Canada because something is going on here. You’ve avoided a stigma that’s attached to the West . . . that other parts of the world regard with such suspicion.”
That, of course was Bono speaking at a Liberal Party convention when populist Liberal Prime Minister passed the torch of liberalism and democracy in Canada to Paul Martin who quickly extinguished that flame of hope because of his political spite and hatred for Chretien.
His miscalculation ushered in an era of conservatism under Stephen Harper the likes of which Canada had never see. Canada no longer has the image that Bono saw that night at the Air Canada Centre in 2003.
And if you ask him about Canada today he might be singing a new tune.
