TOP calls for resignation of Sandy for racist "Calcutta Ship" remark

The Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) on Wednesday called for the resignation of Hilton Sandy as a member of the Tobago House of Assembly and for his withdrawal from the campaign for January 21 Tobago House of Assembly (THA) election.

Sandy has been in the spotlight for his for his racist statement that a "Calcutta ship" would dock in Tobago if the People's National Movement (PNM) loses the election to the TOP, which is aligned to the governing People's Partnership administration led by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

TOP also called on Chief Secretary Orville London to resign because he must take responsibility for the racist comments of a member of his administration.

TOP leader Ashworth Jack told local media Hilton's apology was hollow and betrayed his deep seated racist sentiments. Jack said the PNM has been running a campaign based on generating racial hatred and Hilton's comments were a public manifestation of that racism in the PNM.

"I am now declaring that Mr Sandy based on the statement is racist, and therefore Mr Sandy has no place in public life. He should not be running for public life," Jack said.

"I think what Mr Sandy did is that he reflected the views of the PNM. It is not an isolated view. I am quite sure that you all will know that in the last couple of months anybody who says they did not know, is playing the proverbial ostrich."

He added, "This is a multi-ethnic, multi-racial society, multi-religious. The very national anthem of this country speaks of togetherness when it says, 'Every creed and race should find an equal place'."
The PNM has distanced itself from the comment although it did it after a public outcry about it. The Tobago council of the party has said it accepts the apology.

One media report stated that some PNM supporters are upset about the matter
but they also acknowledged that there is a genuine fear among people in the island that Indians aligned to the United National Congress (UNC) would "invade" the island if the PNM loses to TOP.

The UNC is the dominant party in the coalition and is led by Persad-Bissessar.
