PM Kamla urges MPs, adults to become child advocates

Prime Minister Kamla persad-Bissessar said on Monday all MPs and adults should become child advocates.

In her Christmas message in Parliament she referred to
last Friday’s killing of 20 pupils at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, and urged all adults to ensure that there is no violence against children in Trinidad & Tobago.

Persad-Bissessar described the tragedy as “very heart-rending, very tragic”.

She extended condolences to the people of the United States: “We hold you all in our hearts, we lift you up in our prayers that you will find the strength to move beyond the pain, the anger and anguish that you feel, trusting that in time you will experience God’s healing power and grace.”

She also said Trinidad & Tobago has seen some “unbelievable acts of violence against our own children” and declared that "Such behaviour is intolerable, unconscionable. She added, "I respectfully task each MP and every adult to become a child advocate, ensuring our children are safe, protected and loved.”

Persad-Bissessar said Christmas is a time “to recommit our shared responsibility of caring for all our children.”
