Juliana Chambers dies; PM sends condolences

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Friday expressed "sadness and regret" on learning of the death of Juliana Chambers, wife of the late George Chambers, who was Prime Minister of of Trinidad and Tobago from 1981 to 1986.

In a media release the PM noted that Mrs. Chambers recently expressed pleasure at the posthumous presentation of the nation’s highest award to her husband.

She described Juliana chambers as "a devoted wife and mother, who recently celebrated the observance of this country’s 50th Anniversary endorsing that “the Pride that was there in 1962, is still there now.”

She added, "She was a consummate professional, having worked as a senior officer in the Banking Industry but supported her husband who succeeded Trinidad and Tobago’s first Prime Minister, Dr. Eric Williams in politics, with quiet dignity and decorum.

"On this sad occasion, I extend, on behalf of my family, my government and the people of Trinidad and Tobago, my sincere condolences to her daughter Andrea, family and friends of Mrs. Juliana Chambers. May she rest in eternal peace."

Local media reports say Juliana Chambers collapsed and died at her home in Santa Margarita, St Augustine, on Thursday. She was 81. Her niece, Lou Ann Moo King, told the Guardian newspaper Mrs. Chambers died in the bathroom of her home.
Family sources said Chambers’ daughter Andrea Wilson found her unconscious in the bathroom and called an ambulance. However she didn't make it to hospital. A DMO pronounced her dead at her home.

Juliana married her late husband in 1956, the same year he entered politics and joined the PNM. The country's second PM died on November 4, 1997 at age 69.

Chambers is survived by her only child, Andrea, brothers, Carl and Lloyd, and her sister Ruby Reyes. She will be cremated after a service at Clark and Battoo’s, Tragarete Road, Port-of-Spain, Monday.
