Equality Commission raises questions about ad showing Ken Gordon, Orville London

JYOTI has received an email from the Equal Opportunities Commission (which is reproduced unedited below) sent to President Max Richards complaining about an ad in a daily newspaper showing the chairman of the Integrity Commission, Ken Gordon, with the Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), Orville London.

The email states that the ad and the images send a "coded message to the population that the Commission is or has endorsed the Orville London Administration".

The email states further, "I cannot recall at any time in the past the Chairman of the Integrity Commission appearing with the Minority Leader of the TOP, or Political Leader of the UNC or COP on the eve of an election."

It is urging the president "to take immediate action on this matter so that the integrity of the Integrity Commission is not further compromised."

RE : Complaint Against the Chairman of the Integrity Commission
Excellency:
I wish to draw your attention to a newspaper advertisement –Newsday Tuesday 30th October 2012 – in which the Chairman of the Integrity Commission, Mr. Kenneth Gordon, appears alongside the Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly [THA], Mr. Orville London.

Having consideration to the fact that there is a live matter before the Integrity Commission regarding the revelations made by Minister of Sports Anil Roberts, during the Budget Debate where the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) took part in corruption in a $320 million deal involving the sale, lease and rental of three acres of lands and an office building, all linked to the family of former PNM government minister John Rahael, the timing of this advertisement is ill-time at best and appears to reveal a pro-PNM bias at worst.

To further compound the matter the Chairman of the Integrity Commission exhibited via this advertisement what can be considered gross disregard for the circumstances of the political realities of Trinidad and Tobago the THA Elections having been virtually announced with the dissolving of the Assembly, and the fact that Mr. London as Deputy Political Leader of the PNM appeared at the PNM Convention on Sunday 28th October 2012.

Unfortunately the Integrity Commission advertisement in the newspapers telegraphs a coded message to the population that the Commission is or has endorsed the Orville London Administration. It has further been drawn to my attention that Mr. Gordon has been frequenting Tobago with a ferocious intensity in the build up to the THA Elections and as such this only further cements the perception that the Commission has endorsed and supports the London PNM THA Administration. I cannot recall at any time in the past the Chairman of the Integrity Commission appearing with the Minority Leader of the TOP, or Political Leader of the UNC or COP on the eve of an election. As such I will like to call upon you to take immediate action on this matter so that the integrity of the Integrity Commission is not further compromised.

As this matter may impact on the impending THA Elections I look forward to your urgent response.

Yours truly
Barrington “Skippy” Thomas
