Friends of the UNC Canada issued a media release Friday expressing its deepest appreciation "for the firm and progressive manner in which our esteemed Prime Minister, the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar handled the contentious Section 34 matter".
The release said, "While the opposition and anti-government forces were gathering for a useless show of support against the government, our Prime Minister demonstrated what leadership was all about; she adopted the cautious approach by setting about to determine all the facts before making a judgment on the way forward.

"This was after she agreed that proclaiming the section was wrong and moved immediately to repeal it. She was not satisfied to leave it at that especially since both the Chief Justice and the Director of Public Prosecution had expressed concerns and had contradicted the Justice Minister Mr. Herbert Volney.
"Having determined that Mr Volney erred and after the minister admitted to her that he was wrong, the Prime Minister then took the only logical decision, which was to have Mr. Volney's appointment revoked in the interest of transparency and to keep her pledge to citizens that she would always be accountable to the people.
"The Prime Minister showed a level of leadership that had been absent for too long in our country. Her’s is in sharp contrast to her predecessor, former Prime Minister Patrick Manning, who defended wrongdoing and defied anyone who challenged his dictatorial ways.
"Our leader responded to the people and repealed the whole of section 34 and then went further to dismiss the person who misled the cabinet and offer a sincere apology to the nation. No Prime Minister in the history of Trinidad & Tobago has had that level of humility and commitment to citizens.
"Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar showed that she is a strong leader who is capable of managing the government with distinction. She has also shown that when tough decision needs to be made she would make them; even when those within her inner circle must pay the consequences.

"She did it only recently with Minister Collin Partap and earlier with Minister Mary King. The Prime Minister’s honesty and integrity take precedence over blind loyalty to party members.
"We are convinced more than ever that with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar at the helm, the future for Trinidad & Tobago remains bright."
