The Oilfields Workers' Trade Union (OWTU) and Petrotrin's board of directors are meeting again Thursday to try to settle an industrial matter that has caused a work stoppage, leading to panic buying of fuel.
OWTU President General Ancel Roget and Energy Minister Kevin Ramnarine met for several hours on Wednesday but failed to settle the matter. Roget is scheduled to meet with the Petrotrin board Thursday to discuss outstanding matters.
Roget told reporters Thursday's meeting would deal with the filling of vacancies and also the issue of outstanding variable pay. He also had a message for motorists: "Fill up your tanks because we cannot guarantee a supply of gasoline to the motoring public." He said the refinery at Point a Pierre is still down.
Roget blamed the Petrotrin board for not filling vacancies. "What has happened is that they are putting a hold on it to preserve certain vacancies for some of their friends and families and so on," he charged. "We are not happy that we have not recorded any pronounced achievement after meeting with the Minister," Roget added.
