Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh and a team from his ministry will on Tuesday make a visit to schools that remained closed at the start of the new school year Monday.
Gopeesingh has announced that the ministry would launch an investigation to find out why some principals kept their schools closed without getting permission from supervisors. The T&T Unified Teachers Association reported that 19 schools did not open on Monday.
“This is unacceptable," the minister told local media. "The permanent secretary is calling a meeting of all supervisors and principals to discuss this matter. No one informed the ministry related to this matters and the permanent secretary and the chief education officer are looking into the matter,” he added.
However Gopeesingh said it's the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) that would determine if any action would be taken in the matter.
The first vice president of the T&T Unified Teachers Association Dev Sinanan stated that principals did not have to ask permission. “The principal can exercise discretion in terms of determining whether the school is safe or not," he explained. "If there is evidence, the principal can inform the supervisor but does not have to get permission,” Sinanan added.
