PNM happy that Manning is back; Browne disappointed that MPs didn't show up to welcome former PM

Amery Browne was one of two MPs who went to Piarco International Airport Tuesday night to welcome home his former leader, Patrick Manning.

He and Alicia Hospedales joined supporters of the former Prime Minister who gathered at the airport for Manning's homecoming after a six-month sojourn in the United States where he was treated for the stroke he suffered in January.

Browne acted as a spokesman at the event and the main point he made was that all of the MPs in the Parliament should have joined him to greet Manning.

The leader of the People's National Movement (PNM), Keith Rowley, was absent. So too were most members of the PNM's national executive. The welcome was organised by Manning's San Fernando East constituency.

"I would always put myself in the position of Mr Manning. I'm not 66 and I don't have a stroke, but should I have been in those circumstances and coming out of those doors after all of these months, I really would have wanted to have seen every MP, including those on the Government side being here to welcome me," Browne stated.

Hospedales said, "All I can say is that I am thankful that I am here, and here to celebrate his return and to, you know, just be here to celebrate, you know, just to share the joy with all these members that were present this evening."

Rowley had an explanation. He told local media on Monday night that he was not advised of Manning's return, which he described as a family matter. He added that he did not want to turn the situation into "political football".

The PNM's public relations officer, Faris Al-Rawi, told reporters he was at the airport and met with Manning. Al-Rawi said the PNM is "very, very happy" for Manning's return and wished the former leader a speedy recovery.
