Jack eyes newspaper business; wants to buy shares in Mirror, Newsday: Report

The Express newspaper reported Sunday that Jack Warner is interested in buying shares in the TnT MIRROR and NEWSDAY.

The Express said the chairman of the United National Congress (UNC), who is also the Minister of National Security, confirmed that he has held a meeting with Pedro Chokolingo, one of the owners.

The MIRROR is leased to Maxie Cuffie, former Chief Executive Officer of the Government Information Services (GISL) during the Manning PNM administration. The lease expires on Friday.

Chookolingo Holdings owns 100 per cent of the MIRROR and 39 per cent of NEWSDAY, which makes it the largest single shareholder of NEWSDAY. The chairperson of the group is Dawn Ford, wife of Ashton Forde, general secretary of the People's National Movement (PNM). The paper is currently identified as a pro-PNM publication.

The Express said Warner confirmed that he met with Chokolingo last Wednesday. It added that Warner noted that he and Chokolingo discussed the possible sale of shares in both papers.

The Express said Warner expressed an interest in buying the shares in the MIRROR as well as the NEWSDAY shares if the price is right. "And I said to him (Chokolingo) that I needed to see the financials. I have been promised this information and when it comes I will decide," the Express quoted Warner as saying.

The paper said Warner was surprised to learn that the Express had information about the confidential discussions held with Chokolingo. "I want to repeat this: This information, you got it. I did not give it to you...I didn't want to say 'no comment' because that is not my style. Neither do I duck calls," he said.

He explained that for now his interest in buying the shares "is purely commercial". However he added that he won't rule out the possibility of the arrangement becoming political.

The chair of the Chokolingo Group is Dawn Ford, the wife of Ashton Ford, who is the general secretary of the People's National Movement (PNM).
