Cabinet has agreed to invest $140 million for a Constituency Development Fund with each of the country's 41 constituencies getting $10 million for infrastructure development.
Planning Minister Dr Bhoe Tewarie announced on Thursday that up to 10 per cent of that could be used to help victims of natural disasters such as flooding and landslides. The fund falls within the Ministry of Finance and the Economy, Tewarie said.
He added that it is expected that MPs would use the money mostly for infrastructural development in accordance with public sector procurement principles.
"Each Member of Parliament, regardless of which constituency is involved, will be responsible for identifying and deciding on the projects in their respective constituencies," the minister stated.

Tewarie said although all MPs must consult with their constituents on proposed projects the MP will have the final say on what projects would be undertaken.
He said the necessary legislation will be prepared to give effect to the execution and management of the fund and his ministry would conduct a bi-annual evaluation on the effectiveness of the fund. He said a comprehensive report to Cabinet would be done every two years.
