Commissioner of State Lands to deal with new Re-route camp

Jack Warner told reporters Sunday the Commissioner of State Lands would have to deal with the new Highway Re-Route camp on the M2 Ring Road in Debe.

"We are guided by the Commissioner of State Lands," Warner told reporters who wanted to know what would happen with the new camp. Media interviewed Warner outside the Central Market in Port of Spain yesterday following his participation in a religious Walk for Peace.

The Minister said it is up to
Kumar Koonoolal to write to the Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs for permission to demolish the new camp. The Express newspaper said it spoke with Koonoolal, who advised that all State lands are within his purview.

The protesters built the new camp outside the Debe Wholesale Market, operated by the National Agricultural Marketing Development Corporation (NAMDEVCO). Koonoolal told the paper, "Under the State Land Act, we are supposed to be responsible for removing squatters, that is the routine work that we do."

"I am advised that they are located on State lands near the highway and if that is correct, they shall be removed," Warner told the Express.

"We have to go to where the facts are and the fact is that this country has a Commissioner of State Lands and the Commissioner of State Lands will determine who on State lands and who is not and what has to be done," he added.
