T&T brings back $50 note for 50th anniversary celebrations

The Central Bank of Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday unveiled a new $50 note to commemorate the country's 50th Independence.

A $50 note was first introduced in 1977 along with the $100 note. It was withdrawn in 1979.

Central Bank Governor Ewart Williams said the Government wants to make the currency structure more convenient for public use.

"We may introduce changes to introduce new security features to keep a step ahead of counterfeiters, or to review design features to ensure the continued relevance of the currency to changing local conditions," he said.

Williams added, "The new $50 note will make the currency structure more convenient for public use since it bridges the gap between the $20 and $100. It should also bring some financial savings to the Central Bank over time since it will reduce the demand for the 20s and smaller denominations for meeting transactions."
