The Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism, on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, proudly launches the call for submissions for the National Inventories of Intangible Cultural Heritage and World Natural and Cultural Heritage.
Each inventory will comprise elements of a different aspect of our national patrimony. The National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage will encompass the traditions and living expressions (practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, and skills) which communities and groups recognize as part of their cultural heritage.

The National Inventory of World Cultural and Natural Heritage will focus on our natural and built heritage (monuments, groups of buildings, natural features, geological and physiographical formations and natural sites).
This open call will engender conscious recognition of our identity as a people via the engagement of the national community in a discourse on the practices, activities and spaces that define our people. It is important to note that submissions for these inventories need not be confined the creative arts.
Our framework is informed by a wider view of culture that sees it defined as the sum total of the way of life of a people. Hence, we welcome submissions related to the arts, history, science, technology, labour, religion, agriculture, community life, and all other spheres of achievement that have either man-made or natural physical heritage or intangible practices and folkways related to them.
The development of each Inventory is the first step in the implementation of two international conventions of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to which the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is signatory.

The promulgation of these inventories will represent the meeting of important international obligations arising from our ratification of these conventions.
The online publication of these inventories will assist research by nationals and students of all walks of life on our national patrimony.

Lastly, and most importantly, the promulgation is the first step in the larger process of the safeguarding, preservation and promotion of all the items listed in each inventory. It is for these reasons that all citizens and agencies of all kinds are invited to participate in this process by submitting items for inclusion in each national inventory.
The public can submit items for consideration for inclusion in each respective inventory via our website www.culture.gov.tt/rememberwheninstitute or in person at each branch of the National Library and Information Systems Authority (NALIS) in Trinidad and Tobago.

In October, a selection panel comprising organizations from the public sector and civil society will select items from the submissions for inclusion in each inventory. On December 14, 2012, the Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism will formally promulgate the National Inventories of Intangible Cultural Heritage and World Natural and Cultural Heritage.
