Ramadhar says government to revisit dangerous dog legislation

Prakash Ramadhar said on Saturday Government has agreed to revisit the controversial Dangerous Dogs Act, which is to take effect on August 1.

The leader of the Congress of the People (COP) was a guest speaker at a public consultation held by COP member Nalini Dial, who is an animal rights activist.

Ramadhar said it's possible that the Act may not be enforced in its current because the government is considering public opinion on the issue. Recently, government House Leader Roodal Moonilal stated that the government is willing to hear the views of the stakeholders, adding that nothing is written in stone.

The Act categorises as dangerous dogs the pitbull terrier or any dog bred from a pitbull terrier, a Fila Brasileiro or any dog bred from a Fila Brasileiro and a Japanese Tosa or any dog bred from a Japanese Tosa.

In addition the Act gives the Minister of Local Government the power to declare any other type of dog as a dangerous dog.

Some of the concerns raised by members of the public centered on the lack of infrastructure to support the Act. They have said many owners are considering abandoning their animals to avoid paying the $250,000 annual insurance policy required to keep the dogs listed in the Act.
