Panday's lawyers make no-case submission in retrial on London bank account case

Basdeo Panday heads to court
Basdeo Panday's lawyers began making a no case submission Monday in the retrial of the former Prime Minister for allegedly failing to declare a London bank account, contrary to the Integrity in Public Life Act.

During their presentation, the attorneys made an application to dismiss the matter, claiming that the prosecution had failed to prove its case.

Panday is accused of failing to disclose an account at National Westminster Bank plc, Wimbledon, London, to the Integrity Commission for the years 1997 to 1999.

Chief Magistrate Sherman Mc Nicholls found him guilty of the offence in 2006 and ordered him to serve two years in prison, the maximum penalty under the law.

Panday appealed and won both at the Court of Appeal and the country's highest court, the Privy Council in London. However a retrial was ordered.
