Integrity Commission not fully functioning due to lack of attorney: Report

The Guardian newspaper reported on Tuesday that the Trinidad & Tobago Integrity Commission has not been functioning for more than three months since it does not have a full commission, citing a unnamed "well-placed source".

The paper quoted the source as saying, "They may have been dealing with declarations but with respect to investigations, the commission can’t function without an attorney or its full membership."

The five-member commission is one short due to the suspension of Gladys Gafoor on February 9. Gafoor is deputy chairman and the only attorney on the commission. She is a retired magistrate and former judge of the Industrial Court.

The Guardian said another source has indicated that the commission is working as usual without Gafoor.

"The Integrity Commission has been working very well and doing a lot of things,” the paper quoted the unnamed source as saying.

Gafoor has filed for judicial review of the decision to suspend her and appoint a tribunal to probe allegations against her.

She has questioned the decision by members of the commission last year for her to recuse recuse herself from an investigation into former attorney general John Jeremie.

Jeremie made the request for Gafoor and commissioner, Seunarine Jokhoo, to be removed from all consideration of his matter.
