Integrity Commission clears UDeCOTT boss Jearlean John

The Integrity Commission has determined that Jearlean John was not in breach of the Integrity in Public Life Act with respect to allegations of wrongdoing.

The chairperson of the Urban Development Corporation (UDeCOTT) had been accused of giving her daughter, Aisha Serrette,  preferential treatment in legal work at UDeCOTT.

John told local media Wednesday that she received a letter from the commission clearing her of wrongdoing since there was no evidence to support the charge.

The letter, signed by the Commission's registrar Martin Farrell, stated:

"I refer to my letter to you dated October 3, 2011 in which I advised you of an investigation into possible breaches of the Integrity in Public Life Act, Chapter 22:01. Kindly be advised that the Commission conducted an investigation and has found no evidence to support any breach of the Integrity in Public Life Act."
The letter was
April 27, 2012.

John told reporters, "It got me into trouble early in my tenure at UDeCOTT and resulted in some folks, well any way, it was not very pleasant as it impugned the character of my family."

She added, "This is the risk you run as a public figure when you try to do good you mash on people's corns but I come from humble beginnings in Charlotteville, Tobago, with no silver spoons and no early mentor."

She also spoke about how the matter affected her. "It's vindicated on paper but ...the tragedy is...that you found yourself having to run behind your name to catch it...I could have been destroyed and then that would not have been an easy thing."

John said she is convinced that the motive was to destroy her. "There was no doubt about it, you know, you bring in change, you're working hard at it and there are folks who decide that well you ought not to do the job that you are doing."

The matter of the allegations against John became controversial after the then head of the Commission confirmed the probe to the media before advising John that she was under investigation. That led to the resignation of Eric St Cyr as chairman of the commission
