Foreign Affairs and Communications Minister Dr Surujrattan Rambachan told reporters on Thursday the government is actively taking legislative and security steps to protect Trinidad and Tobago (TT) from the threat of terrorism.
Rambachan was responding to a report from the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security, which described T&T as a possible “transit point for potential terrorists or terrorist organisations.”
Rambachan stated, “It will always be a concern of any government when matters speak about terrorism and the possibilities of terrorism. Therefore we have to be very sensitive and ensure that our intelligence is at work.”
He said the various agencies of the National Security Ministry are very active in monitoring the movement of persons through the country’s borders. “We do work in coordination with the security services in the United States to look at persons called persons of interest. We are well aware and sensitive to these matters,” Rambachan said.
He also pointed out that Government recently passed Anti-Terrorism and Bacteriological Weapons legislation to increase the country's ability to fight different dimensions of terrorism.
