Police arrest Ian Alleyne

Police arrested TV Crime Watch host Ian Alleyne Thursday at the TV6 studios in Port of Spain.

Shortly before the arrest Alleyne's lawyer, Om Lalla, spoke about the matter on Alleyne's TV show.

Lalla said the police action related to the airing of videotape on Crime Watch showing the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl in Morvant on October 25th and 26th, 2011.

The Telecommunications Authority had written to CCN TV6 stating that Alleyne may have committed an offence by showing the video.

Alleyne’s supporters blocked a gate to the TV compound to try to prevent police vehicles from taking away Alleyne, who had initially resisted arrest. Alleyne was eventually arrested.

Alleyne has been a controversial character ever since he started his show, which was originally broadcast on WINtv. He was fired from there and he later moved the show to TV6.

Alleye has many supporters but there are also many people and groups who have objected to the content of his shows.

Local media reports stated that police were advised by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard that they could charge the TV host under section 32 (2) of the Sexual Offences Act.

The section states: "A person who publishes or broadcasts any matter contrary to subsection 1 is guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine of twenty-five thousand dollars and to imprisonment for five years.”

The Guardian newspaper also reported that police are considering laying similar charges on a senior member of staff at the TV station in relation to the same broadcasts.

Alleyne is expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate Friday.

They are too wicked! For a little country this island is WAY too corrupt! This is a blatant slap in the face to justice! Arresting a man such as Ian for a charge as stupid as that! Everyone knows this has nothing to do with that tape. The "Big Boys" in the country are mad that someone's finally getting in their way. God doesn't sleep, you criminals will pay one way or the other. Enjoy it while it lasts! Police who are suppose to protect the public and the interest of the public, to be in such an act. You scum should be ashamed! I have never gotten so pissed watching tv in my life.
