PM Kamla discusses partnerships with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar held bilateral talks Sunday with Brazil’s first female President, Dilma Rousseff, on the final day of the Sixth Summit of the Americas in Colombia.

The two leaders discussed a number of areas for partnering between the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and the Brazilian Government.

Despite vast economic differences, both women have maintained strong bilateral relations between the two nations over the last two years with a particular focus on empowering women and girls and enhancing women’s political participation.

Persad-Bissessar raised the possibility of a Memorandum of Understanding between Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago for an air services agreement which will allow for a direct air transportation link between the two countries.

The Prime Minister also discussed a proposed Embrapa model farm for CARICOM, which is to be set up in Trinidad. And she reminded Rousseff about her promise to donate land for the project.

Persad-Bissessar recalled discussions with Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Patriota about the importation of Brazilian beef and said the T&T Ministry of Food Production will liaise with Brazilian officials on the matter.

She expressed her enthusiasm about the upcoming Rio+20 in June, 2012. This is the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), which is being organized in pursuance of a General Assembly Resolution.

The Conference will take place in Brazil from 20 to 22 June to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg.

Persad-Bissessar has already accepted an invitation by United Nation Women's Michele Bacholet to participate in a side-event on women’s empowerment supported by President Rousseff.

Persad-Bissessar reiterated her invitation to Rousseff to visit Trinidad and Tobago as an official guest of Government.
