No abuse of process in Alleyne arrest: Richardson

Deputy Commissioner of Police Mervyn Richardson told reporters Friday there was no abuse of process in the arrest of CrimeWatch host, Ian Alleyne.

Richardson said police officers had planned to take Alleyne in for questioning after unsuccessful attempts to reach him at home and his failure to report to police for questioning.

"There was no intention at that time to arrest Mr. Alleyne. It was simply to interview him," Richardson told reporters at a media briefing.

He said officers acted properly, politely, and observed all proper protocols.Richardson said, “Three officers alone entered the compound of CCN. They remained there for 45 minutes while Mr. Alleyne's show was in progress. At the end of the show, they called again for Mr. Alleyne to make himself available for the interview and that was not happening.”

Richardson said the situation escalated because Alleyne resisted.

“This thing would not have happened, this thing could've been dealt with in a very amicable way if there was some degree of cooperation. As a matter of fact, I intervened. I intervened to say: could you please cooperate with the officers to bring this saga to an end? But persons chose otherwise," he stated.
