Acting Attorney General Dr Roodal Moonilal has told officials of the Ministry of Local Government to consider the suggestions made by stakeholders with respect to the Dangerous Dogs Act, which targets pitbulls.
On Sunday pitbull owners, groups of dog lovers and other individuals held a meeting at the Queen's Park Savannah at which they criticised the law.
Moonilal responded by saying that nothing is written in stone.
On Monday, he told local media, "I have also instructed that persons who have raised issues concerning the proclamation and introduction of the Dangerous Dogs legislation, that such persons be consulted immediately with a view that the Ministry of Local Government, in drafting regulations, can take on board some of their suggestions."
He added, "If the legislation is allowed to take its course, if there are problems that will arise, we are very open to listening, to bring changes either through legislation or through amendments. I think it is important that the Act be allowed to come into force. Then we will look at whatever problems they will give rise too."
Moonilal said whatever decision is made will be in the best interest of citizens.
"One has to always balance in the community the interests of citizens and victims along with the interest of persons who rear those dogs for either professional reasons, either for employment, security and so on, or for pets. So it is a balancing activity."
