Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan announced on Wednesday that construction of the new Arima Hospital is expected to begin in September. He said the targeted handover and commissioning date is April 2015.
The Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (UDeCOTT) has been appointed as the project developers for the construction and equipping of the new hospital.
Public tenders for the hospital opened on April 2, 2012 with a pre-bid meeting and site visit for the prospective bidders on April 19, 2012.
The new hospital will be on the compound of the existing Arima District Health Facility, which is located near the Arima Savannah.
The ministry said international best practice standards would used in the construction of the building and the equipment.
The new hospital will be managed by the North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA). It would strengthen the hospital network system and ensure an improved level of access to Secondary care services in the region. The new 150 bed Arima Hospital will include:

This would meet the ministry's objective with regard to space requirements, function and ambient conditions.
A release from the ministry said, "The finishes, decor and ambience of the New Arima Hospital will be relaxing, comfortable and to the greatest extent possible non-institutional in appearance.
"Child-friendly facilities would be incorporated for those services that are to be accessed by children. Green engineering concepts for energy efficiency would be incorporated into the design elements of the hospital."

- Inpatients Services: Surgical, Intensive Care Unit, Orthopaedic, Maternity

- Diagnostic Services: Laboratory, Ultrasound and Radiology
- Outpatients Clinics and Pharmacy
- Physiotherapy
- Adult and Children Emergency services
