PM Kamla leaves Sunday for 2-day state visit to Panama

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar leaves on Sunday for a two-day State visit to Panama. She will return home on Wednesday.

In a media release, the Office of the Prime Minister said among other things the visit is to conclude negotiations related to a Partial Scope Agreement between Trinidad and Tobago and Panama.

It's expected that she will also sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during a bi-lateral meeting to be held with President Ricardo Martinelli.

Members of her delegation will include Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communications Dr.Surujrattan Rambachan, Minister of Trade and Industry Stephen Cadiz, Minister of Energy Kevin Ramnarine and the Ambassador for Trade in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Communications Mervyn Assam.

The Government has indicated that a part of Trinidad and Tobago's strategic investment thrust is to diversify and expand exports and to make Trinidad and Tobago a gateway to Central and South America.

In this regard the government has been pursuing several trade agreements with Central and South American Countries. Trinidad and Tobago has substantial trade arrangements with several South American countries including Brazil, Chile and Argentina.

Persad-Bissessar has described Latin America as the new frontier for South South Trade opportunities given the strategic location of Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean.

Trinidad and Tobago is poised to become a platform for manufacturers to enter a market with the potential to reach 600 million persons in South and Central America.

Trinidad & Tobago is expected to conclude agreements with Panama
with preferential tariff arrangements for the export of bitumen, cement, ceramic tiles, clay tiles, steel products and other goods manufactured at home.

Commenting on her, the Prime Minister said that she is looking forward to the discussions in Panama and further indicated that the country will continue to aggressively pursue new markets for its manufactured goods and services, the release stated.

It did not say who will act while the Prime Minister is away. This would be the PM's third overseas trip this year. She just returned from a two-day Caricom summit in Suriname and in January she made a State visit to India.
