Rambachan slams newspaper article, complains of lack of objectivity

One of the Deputy Political Leader of the United National Congress (UNC) issued a statement Sunday in response to a front page story in the Sunday Expressed headlined: Missing in Action, which quotes critics of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar saying that she has neglected some of her constituents.

In a prepared statement Dr Suruj Rambachan said he expects many more political attacks to be made upon the Prime Minister, especially in light of the upcoming internal elections of the UNC.

“I expect that there will be many more political attacks upon the Prime Minister and Political Leader of the UNC as we approach the internal elections," Rambachan said.

"In addition, she has disappointed many of her critics by the sterling and decisive leadership qualities she has demonstrated in stabilizing the economy and together with her Ministers putting it on the path of growth once again," he added.

Rambachan stated that Persad-Bissessar's critics remain stunned by the way she has successfully managed the coalition and partnership.

"Her skills at negotiating solutions to problems and issues that face any coalition in any part of the world has also meant that her detractors have again been disappointed since they believed that she could not keep the partnership together. Not only has the UNC grown stronger but the partnership has also grown stronger as a government.

"Mrs Bissessar continues to enjoy the support of her party and its membership. The stunning show of support at last January’s celebration of her second year as Political Leader by at least 25,000 members and supporters at Rienzi Complex confirms that she remains a most popular Prime Minister and Political Leader.

"The article which appeared in today’s (Sunday) Express newspaper smacks of Political inventiveness supportive of a few failed politicians hoping to stage a comeback.

"The reporter fails to take note of the extensive amount of work done (including roads paved) in the Constituency of Siparia as well as the plans announced by her and her Ministers for improving the quality of life and delivery of services.

"In fact in every electoral area of her Constituency work is being done by the Regional Corporations.

"Further she has announced plans for the new Siparia market, a Technology Center at Clarke Road, a specialist hospital in Penal, the Penal Debe Administrative Complex and major Community Center Complex at Bunsee Trace amongst others. The lack of objectivity in the article betrays the true intent of the reporter," the communications minister said.

Rambachan's criticism of the newspaper is in direct contrast to a statement made on Thursday by the Prime Minister.

Speaking at a news conference Persad-Bissessar stated "I don't think you're unfair," in response to criticism of the media by her partnership colleague Makandal Daaga.

She added, "So I don't think you're unfair, you're doing your jobs. You go out there and you write, and because the media is so competitive everybody wants a bigger story than the other one, so you're doing your jobs...it would be nice to see some more analytical journalists.

"At the moment, we get a lot of, as I say, headlines, but, the stories themselves are quite good, sometimes I'm quite surprised at some of the stories."
