WASA personnel at work disconnection supplies to delinquent customers |
The disconnection exercise is aimed at recovering more than $500 million in outstanding water rates. Domestic customers owe the authority $356 million.
One customer whose service was disconnected owed more than $70,000 and had not paid water bills for 13 years.
WASA has advised people to avoid disconnection by paying their outstanding bills. However the authority has noted that those whose services are cut off would have to pay a reconnection fee of $500 in addition to the arrears before they get back their service.
