Oops! Village council that led Penal protest didn't raise concerns with MPs office

The Village Council that led last week's protests in Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s Siparia constituency has admitted to the Trinidad Guardian that it might have "erred" in not telling the MP's office about the concerns raised during the demonstrations.

The paper quoted Deanna Leotaud, chair of the village council, as saying, “We didn’t intend to embarrass the Prime Minister and it wasn’t a political stunt or started by unions."

She added, “Prior to the protest we had never communicated our concerns to the MP’s office and the officials at the MP’s office last Thursday told us we really should have communicated our concerns to them, so we have erred in that regard.”

Leotaud told the paper the group has always known that it should liaise with the Regional Corporation or the Works Ministry.

She said villagers were eager to stage a protest. “We should have taken a while to discuss it but last Monday morning we were caught offguard since the villagers began the protest and we eventually became the mouthpiece for it," she explained.

“It was not the council that organised the protest, per se. If we were given time to discuss it I think a different approach would have been taken.”

Leotaud praised her MP. “Mrs Persad-Bissessar has been a better MP than others. She’s the only one I know so I have no basis for comparison...we’re not disputing work isn’t being done. It’s just that we’re not seeing much in our area which borders Ortoire-Mayaro seat," she explained.

“It’s not that we don’t ever get anything though. We had work done for water lines recently. It’s just that the area suffered so much under the PNM. It’s not that we expect the PP to do everything overnight, but also we can’t wait further for another election," she added.

Leotaud also said the village council will strengthen communication with the MP’s office and councillors and she stated that there won't be any more protests like the ones seen last week.
