Tewarie, Ramadhar disappointed that PNM won't participate in JSC

Planning and Development Minister Dr. Bhoe Tewarie is disappointed that the opposition has withdrawn from the Joint Select Committee (JSC) of Parliament that was established to shape procurement legislation.

Opposition Leader Keith Rowley told reporters Monday his party won't participate in the proceedings, calling the JSC a "Government pappy show". Rowley said in his view there are too many questionable practices in the procurement process with respect to a number of projects.

Tewarie said on Tuesday he was surprised to learn of the decision, adding that as far as he is aware, there is no problem with the committee. He urged Rowley to reconsider his decision.

"No matter how unappetizing a situation might be up here, if you have an opportunity to do something to make it better, or to put something in place that will improve the condition of procurement in the country, I think you have a responsibility and obligation to make sure it happens," he told reporters.

The leader of the Congress of the People (COP) also expressed regret and deep concern over Rowley's announcement.

In a statement Prakash Ramadhar said it is important that all stakeholders come together to work on a common platform and do what is best for the country.

"The fact that Dr. Rowley and the PNM could abdicate its responsibility on such a serious matter is sad and extremely disappointing," Ramadhar said. "This was an excellent opportunity for all concerned to work together on the daunting talk of eradicating corruption from our society."

Ramadhar called on Dr. Rowley and the PNM to reconsider their position and return to the table. "Let us show the country that we can work together and at all times put country first," he said.
