Temporary food cards available at MPs offices in T&T

The Ministry of the People and Social Development has launched a new temporary Food Card to help the vulnerable in communities across Trinidad & Tobago.

People Minister Dr. Glenn Ramadharsingh said Monday the prepaid disposable food card that will act as a complement to the permanent food card.
The electronic cash relief card will have a value of $410 initially and allow recipients to buy basic food items at selected supermarkets.

Each Member of Parliament's Office can recommend up to 50 persons to receive the card within their constituencies. He said these people must be "in dire need".

The cards would be valid for only three months during which time the persons who get the relief can apply for permanent food cards.

Ramadharsingh said beneficiaries of the food programs can also immediately get placed in another program to receive career advice and re-training, immunisation for babies, assistance getting ID cards and birth certificates.

He said the true success of the Food Card Programme is measured by the number of people who have helped themselves to the point where they no longer need the food support and can return their cards.

He noted that since assuming office that has been the case with 532 people.
