Portia Simpson Miller takes the oath of office Thursday to become the new Jamaican prime minister.
Last week she led her People's National Party (PNP) to a stunning victory against the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) led by Andrew Holness, who had served as Prime Minister for just two months as the successor to Bruce Golding.
The PNP won 42 of the 63 seats in the Jamaican parliament.
It's the second time that Simpson Miller is leading a government in Jamaica. She served for a short time between 2006 and 2007 when she took over the leadership from PJ Patterson, who retired during the PNP's third term in office.
She subsequently lost the general election in 2007 to the JLP led by Golding.
Acting Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago, Winston Dookeran, has sent a congratulatory note to the new Jamaican leader on behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Dookeran also congratulated the PNP on its victory at the polls.
In a media release, Dookeran said, "Both Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica have enjoyed a long and trusted relationship and have developed strong ties over the years in the pursuit of national and regional interests.
"We are extremely confident that under the leadership of Prime Minister Simpson-Miller both our nations will continue to collaborate and work together towards the sustained development and prosperity of our respective countries and peoples as we face the many challenges that confront us."
Trinidad & Toabgo's High Commissioner to Jamaica will represent the Prime Minister, the Government, and People of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago at the swearing-in ceremony at King’s House, the official home of the Jamaican Governor General.
