Past and present: COP founding leader Winston Dookeran with current leader Prakash Ramadhar |
Dookeran, who is acting prime minister, made the announcement at the sixth national assembly of the Congress of the People (COP) at Hillview College, Tunapuna.
The COP's founding leader said income equality is a cornerstones of economic stability. He noted that the country is still far from achieving this goal, citing official statistics from the Central Bank.
"I have already asked my ministry to review the tax system, with a view to bringing us closer to equality of income," the minister said.
The party said thanks to its founding leader, who did not contest the leadership in 2011. It presented Dookeran with a documentary of his career up to the time he founded the COP in 2005.
A guest speaker at the event was Khemraj Ramjattan, leader of Guyana political party Alliance for Change, who spoke on the theme of third party politics in the Caribbean.
