Transport Minister Devant Maharaj confirmed to the Express newspaper on wednesday that the Mayor of Port of Spain, Louis Lee Sing, has been removed from the Transportation Board for not attending meetings.
The Express said Maharaj stated that Lee Sing only attended two of the 14 meetings of the board held so far. The paper said a Cabinet was sent last month note to have Lee Sing removed from the board.
United National Congress (UNC) councillor at the Port of Spain City Corporation Robin Bynoe has taken the mayor's place on the board.
The Express quoted Lee Sing as saying that he learned about his removal from media reports. he called that a lack of professionalism"from this government and this minister in particular".
He explained that the meetings conflicted with critical committee meetings of the Port of Spain City Corporation, which he chairs. "So I could not be at two places at the same time," he added.
Maharaj and Lee Sing have a long history of being at loggerheads going back to the time when Lee Sing chaired the National Lotteries Board and Maharaj was an employee. Maharaj faced discrimination there and won his case in the courts.

Maharaj also launched a legal challenge - and won - against the Manning PNM government with respect to the granting of a radio broadcast license to Lee Sing's company while denying the same for the Maha Sabha.
The minister spoke about Lee Sing's removal at a meeting with auto dealers that was called to try to find solutions to the problem of delays at the Port of Spain and San Fernando Licensing Offices.
Maharaj said a major problem is a delay in filling more than 100 positions at the officers, noting that problem is that the service commissions are "simply not filling the positions."
The minister said it would be necessary to employ additional staff on short term contracts until the Motor Vehicle Authority is established. He said one solution is to hire retirees, including retired licensing officers, transport commissioners and deputies to supervise the new clerical officers "to ensure they follow procedure and process properly".
