Health Ministry getting 12 new ambulances

Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan said on Thursday cabinet has approved his ministry's request for 12 new locally outfitted ambulances at a cost of $4.2 million.

Speaking at the post cabinet news conference, Khan said his ministry the Vehicle Management Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (VMCOTT) would equip the ambulances.

He said he presented cabinet with “horror stories” of the deficiencies in the National Ambulance Service and cabinet took note of the problems in the service.

Each of the units would cost about $350,000 to equipment, the minister said. The vehicles would be placed at the Regional Health Authorities, as well as the National Ambulance Service.

He said the government bought 14 ambulances in 2007, another 15 in 2008 and 10 are still in the tendering process.

The minister said the authorities are planning to put in place a system that allows smaller ambulances to be used for short runs.

“I have decided that these ambulances that are placed in the Regional Health Authorities will be able to pick up citizens from any part of the regional health area that they serve and transport these patients to the public health institutions," Khan said.
