Griffith mourns Afzal, calls his death a great loss for journalism

Hundreds of friends, colleagues and relatives attended then funeral on Monday of veteran journalist and communications specialist, Afzal Khan, who died Sunday morning at the age of 55.

In a tribute, Minister of Tourism Dr. Rupert Griffith said Khan's death is a great loss for journalism.

Khan had recently been appointed Corporate Communications Manager at the Tourism development Corporation (TDC) and had also served under Griffith in the Information Minister during the Panday UNC administration.

Dr. Griffith told local media, "He (Khan) has performed with credit and I want to say that I cherished the memories, when Afzal worked with me as Minister of Information and Communications, I always respected his knack for the details, excellence and professionalism. It is a great loss to journalism."

Khan began his career at Trinidad & Tobago Television (TTT) in 1975. He also held executive positions in media including CEO of HCU Communications Limited, Chairman of Radio Shakti Limited and Head of News, Sports and Current Affairs at TTT.

He was named BWIA Journalist of the Year in 1986 and in 1987, he won the Caribbean Broadcasting Union Journalist of the Year Award.
